To kick off the DarkSky certification, Sun Valley Resort is launching its first guided stargazing event – timed perfectly for the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, NASA’s pick for the best meteor shower of the year!
Stars Over Sun Valley takes place on Wednesday, August 12, from 9PM to 11PM. A sunset gondola ride carries you up to the historic Roundhouse at 7,700 feet on Bald Mountain, where you’ll find elevated bites, desserts, beer, wine, and a “dark sky cocktail.” Astronomy experts lead an immersive program covering the science and stories behind what you’re seeing, and professional-grade telescopes are on hand for close-up views of planets, constellations, star clusters, and the Perseids themselves. This year’s timing couldn’t be better – the shower peaks August 12–13 under a new moon, meaning completely dark skies and up to 100 meteors per hour.

The further you travel from the valley lights, the richer the sky becomes. Park at the Galena summit overlook and you’re at elevation with the entire Boulder Mountains spread below.
Trail Creek Road: A short drive out Trail Creek Road from Sun Valley leads to noticeably darker skies. On summer nights, the Milky Way appears to rise directly out of Baldy Mountain — one of the most stunning compositions in the valley.
